Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team went the entire month of October without getting beaten. Unfortunately, November began in heartbreaking fashion for the Knights, and it's unclear whether they will take the field again in the 2014 season.
On Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, second-seeded Bellarmine was upset 2-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinals by seventh-seeded Missouri S&T, ending the Knights' school-record 12-game unbeaten streak and clouding their previously rock-solid prospects for an NCAA Tournament bid.
Bellarmine (13-3-3) entered the GLVC Tournament ranked fourth in the Midwest Region, which owns six slots in the NCAA Tournament. The Knights' uncertain fate now rests with the selection committee.
"It's going to take some help in other tournaments, but we have to keep a mindset as if we can get an NCAA bid, so that if we do, we aren't scrambling to get back into soccer mode," BU Coach
Chris Tinius said. "Hopefully 13-3-3 and finishing second in a very tough conference at least gets us consideration. Beyond that, we left it in someone else's hands and will have to accept whatever happens."
Entering the conference tournament quarterfinals, Bellarmine hadn't been defeated since falling 1-0 to visiting Quincy on Sept. 19 as the Knights piled up an unbeaten streak that reached a dozen games, including a 3-0 victory over Missouri S&T (9-9) on Oct. 12. The rematch with the Miners often resembled the Quincy clash, as the Knights largely dominated in possession and shots but couldn't find the back of the net while its opponent capitalized on its chances.
Missouri S&T was the aggressor early, however, and was rewarded for it. Despite its unbeaten run, Bellarmine has been prone to falling behind early in games this season, and that's what happened against the Miners as Sabrina Hostler scored in the 10th minute off an assist from Sarah Hostler.
Bellarmine asserted itself after that and racked up a far superior shot count, but this time the Knights could not make a comeback. BU fired off 20 shots to seven for S&T, including an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Miners capitalized on half of their chances on frame, while the Knights couldn't crack goalkeeper Kaitlyn Deister, who tied a career high with 11 saves. Bellarmine also held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
"It was a tough day at the office," Tinius said. "We created plenty of chances with 20 shots and a host of corners. The flow of the game wasn't too dissimilar from last time except we finished last time and they did this time."
S&T added a valuable insurance goal in the 76th minute as Sabrina Hostler scored again by punching in a deflection off her own shot. Hostler now has 10 goals this season.
Sophomore forward
Mary Beth Gorham led Bellarmine with five shots, including three on goal. Senior midfielder
Emily Hollander chipped in four shots for the Knights.
"Congratulations to S&T and (Coach) Joe (McCauley)," Tinius said. "They were completely dominant in both goal boxes today. Even with four forwards, the last 12 minutes we couldn't win a ball off of them. If they keep that up, they can win the whole thing."
