For the Bellarmine University women's basketball team's SAAC Challenge project, the Knights spent a fun-filled day imparting their basketball knowledge and encouragement to young girls from The Cabbage Patch Settlement House, a non-profit Christian organization located in Louisville whose mission, according to its website, is "to equip and empower at-risk children, youth, and their families, to be self-sufficient by helping them maximize their economic, educational, emotional, moral, physical, social and spiritual potential." The young hoopsters observed the Knights practice for about an hour before the team demonstrated some favorite, fun drills they enjoy performing. The youngsters got the opportunity to work on some fundamentals, tour the locker room and listen to Coach
Chancellor Dugan speak before a question-and-answer session. They also got to play the basketball games "knockout" and "dribble tag." Said senior guard and SAAC officer
Therese Montano: "We stressed the importance of education and how basketball could be a great way to pay for college. … They left with huge smiles and a newfound excitement for sports. They were extremely appreciative of our efforts."
