On Tuesday, Sept. 28, members of the Bellarmine University men's and women's cross country teams took to "rabbiting" for area elementary and middle school students in the greater Louisville area.
The annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes "Run with the Stars" attracted nearly 500 elementary and middle school aged runners from Jefferson, Oldham, Bullitt and Spencer counties. One of the unique features of the race is local college runners serve as the race "rabbits" to guide the children on the course. The college runners not only lead the race, but a number of them also run with the youngsters in the middle and back of the races to offer encouragement, support and ensure the runners follow the correct course.
This is the second year that Race Director Steve Wiggington has reached out to the Bellarmine cross country teams to support this worthy cause. There were eight races, ranging in distance from 1-2 miles, for girls and boys in grades 1-8. The Knights also assisted in handing out medals and speaking to the children on running topics, nutrition and being a good student.
