INDIANAPOLIS — In a pair of tennis matches over the weekend against Great Lakes Valley Conference rivals, Bellarmine University's Evann Waschuk fulfilled both her No. 1 duties in triumphant fashion.

As a result of her 4-0 performance that helped guide the Knights to two victories, the league office on Tuesday announced the selection of Waschuk as the GLVC's Women's Tennis Player of the Week. A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, this is Waschuk's first career weekly award and the first for a Knight since Caitlin Hanley was recognized by the league on March 25, 2014.

In a critical and tense 5-4 win over Missouri-St. Louis early Sunday, Waschuk captured victories in both matches she was involved in. The Knights' senior, along with Hanley, helped BU get off on the right foot against the Tritons with an 8-5 win in No. 1 doubles play over Lina Parra and Natalia Carvalhais.

Then, in No. 1 singles action, Waschuk split the first two sets with Renee Verboven 6-4, 4-6 before digging deep and triumphing 10-7 in the tiebreaker. The All-GLVC honoree ultimately had a hand in two of the five victories needed to edge the Tritons.

Later on Sunday, Waschuk helped lay the groundwork for an 8-1 romp over Truman State, first teaming with Hanley for a decisive 8-3 win over Kim Birenbaum and Marisa Thome in No. 1 doubles play and then capping her perfect day of tennis with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Birenbaum in No. 1 singles action.

In the process, Waschuk maintained her upward climb of Bellarmine's all-time wins list. Her four victories on Sunday pushed her into eighth place with 82.

"After coming off an emotional win against UMSL, we could have had a letdown, but our No. 1 doubles team and Nos. 1 and 2 singles players and captains, Evann Waschuk and Caitlin Hanley, led the way with great efforts," noted BU Coach John Mican on Sunday.
