LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After observing Bellarmine University's handling of the 2014 Division II National Championships Fall Festival, Knights Head Lacrosse Coach
Kevin Burns believed Owsley B. Frazier Stadium would be the ideal site for the inaugural Midwest Classic Lacrosse Weekend.
The event will feature four games over a three-day period and include Bellarmine, Ohio State, Detroit and Marquette. Each team will play twice — once on Friday night and another time on Sunday afternoon.
"We volunteered to host the first year of it," Burns said. "After the DII Championships, I knew we'd be good at hosting an event like this. I wanted to get those teams here. I think it's good for lacrosse in Louisville to have some really good Division I lacrosse teams come down here."
The action gets underway at 3:30 p.m. (ET) Friday at Frazier Stadium with a contest between Detroit (2-1) and Marquette (3-0). Bellarmine (1-1) and Ohio State (3-1) are set to follow at 6 p.m. On Sunday, the Buckeyes and Golden Eagles will meet at 1 p.m., and the Knights and Titans will cap the weekend with a 3:30 p.m. clash.
Burns views the Midwest Classic Lacrosse Weekend as not just a showcase for the Knights but also the sport itself.
"I've already been contacted by a ton of local club team coaches and youth coaches who intend to bring their kids to the games," he said. "It will be an exciting event for everybody. It will be good for a bunch of the parents, too, to get two games in one weekend. We've got guys on our team from about 17 states and two Canadian provinces."
Admission each day is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-18. Children under 5 years old are free.
