Box Score WESTFIELD, Ind. — A turnaround season for the Bellarmine University baseball team concluded Thursday night with a 5-1 loss to Indianapolis at Grand Park in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
Earlier in the day, the sixth-seeded Knights fell in their tournament opener to third-seeded William Jewell. BU finished the season 28-24, a nine-win improvement over 2014. They also won twice as many games in conference play.
After an explosive sweep of McKendree to finish the regular season in which Bellarmine scored eight or more runs in all four games, the Knights managed very little run production in the GLVC Tournament, scoring one run in each contest.
Sophomore first baseman
Nick Wright and freshman designated hitter
Griffin Neuer combined for five of Bellarmine's seven hits against the second-seeded Greyhounds (34-18) and starting pitcher Jordan Tackett, who improved to 6-4 after tossing 8-plus innings and allowing one earned run on seven hits.
Wright went 3 for 4 while Neuer was 2 for 3 with a triple. Freshman shortstop
Drew Greenwood collected an RBI double, and junior third baseman
Cole Metcalfe contributed a base hit and a run scored while pushing his hitting streak to 15 games. Senior center fielder and GLVC Player of the Year
Austin Crutcher swiped two bases and moved into sole possession of third place on Bellarmine's all-time stolen-bases list with 73.
Eddie Mathis (2-6) tossed his fourth complete game for Bellarmine. The freshman left-hander allowed five earned runs on 10 hits and no walks with five strikeouts in 9.0 innings pitched. The All-GLVC selection finished the season with a team-best 2.62 ERA.
Bellarmine scored its lone run in the ninth inning. Metcalfe and Wright started the frame with consecutive singles before Greenwood ripped a run-scoring double to left center. Dylan Stutsman relieved Tackett and retired the next three Knights to record his third save.
Mathis shut out UIndy through the first four innings, but first baseman Daniel Lee highlighted a four-run fifth for the Greyhounds with a two-run homer.
The Knights have six seniors departing in Crutcher,
Ryan Dixon,
Benjamin Fuchs,
Andy Gehr,
Phillip Leopold and
Trevor Schneider.
