PLAINFIELD, Ill. — Freshman
Maggie Walroth and senior
Caitlin Hanley added to program records, but the Bellarmine University women's tennis team fell 2-5 to Rockhurst on Friday at Plainfield East (Ill.) High School in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
Bellarmine, which was the East Division's No. 3 seed, finished the season 11-9. Rockhurst, the West's No. 2 seed, improved to 13-5.
Bellarmine won two of the three doubles matches but lost four singles contests as Rockhurst clinched the victory and advances to face Lewis, the East's No. 1 seed, in Saturday's semifinals.
Hanley and Walroth defeated Emma Schelble and Tamara Santos 9-7 at No. 1 doubles. The Knights' duo pushed their single-season program record to 21 wins together. The victory gave Walroth 39 combined singles and doubles wins, another single-season program record. Hanley finished her career with 103 total victories, second in program history.
Sophomores
Mairin Cotter and
Marissa Kovach also were victorious at No. 3 doubles, posting an 8-3 win over Justine Berezintsev and Kim Vrugteveen. It was only their third doubles match together this season.
Rockhurst won at No. 2 doubles and the Hawks played strong in singles action, winning in straight sets at Nos. 2,3, 5 and 6. Walroth, at No. 1, and Kovach, at No. 4, did not complete their matches as the Hawks clinched the match.
Bellarmine will return the vast majority of its roster. Hanley is the lone senior on the squad.
