INDIANAPOLIS — The fifth-seeded Bellarmine University men's soccer team fell 2-1 to fourth-seeded Indianapolis on Sunday at Key Stadium in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
Sophomore midfielder
Mitch Lammert scored a first-half goal for Bellarmine (11-5-1). James Jenkins accounted for both goals for Indianapolis (11-5-1).
Indianapolis got on the board early as Jenkins scored his first goal in the 11th minute. It was something of a repeat of the regular-season match, also at Key Stadium, when Jenkins scored in only the eighth minute.
Bellarmine never delivered the equalizer in the first contest, but the Knights did on Sunday when Lammert redirected a UIndy clear from around 35 yards, blasting it over the Greyhounds goalkeeper and into the left corner of the net to knot it at 1-1 in the 29th minute. It was Lammert's second goal of the season, both coming in the last two matches.
The score remained unchanged at halftime. Indianapolis went ahead 2-1 in the 66th minute on Jenkins' second goal.
Bellarmine created plenty of chances offensively. The Knights finished with a 20-11 advantage in shots, including 7-5 on goal. Bellarmine also had a decisive 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The loss is expected to end Bellarmine's season. If that is the case, the Knights finished one victory shy of the program record. Their nine GLVC wins tied a program record.
