Knights wrestling initiates 'diaper drive' to help victims of Hurricane Harvey

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In response to hardships faced by families in Texas after Hurricane Harvey, the Bellarmine University wrestling team started a "diaper drive" in an effort to send diapers of all sizes to the Texas Diaper Bank.

"We chose diapers because they were a much-needed item that was not supplied by most disaster relief agencies," Bellarmine Coach Spencer Adams said. "When families evacuated into shelters, most were not able to bring enough diapers for their family members. The Texas Diaper Bank stepped in to help alleviate the shortage but were running low on supplies, so our team decided to step in and help. All in all, we were able to send thousands of diapers and wipes directly to the Texas Diaper Bank raising around $500 in total.

"I am very pleased with the efforts of our guys and their families," Adams added. "It's a very small deed but as a parent of three young children I could only imagine what some of these families have gone through just simply trying to get through each day while they were in shelters during the aftermath of Harvey. It makes me happy to know that our Bellarmine wrestling family has stepped up to make a small yet very important difference during this time."

According to its website, here is the Texas Diaper Bank's history: "Established by ten local United Methodist Churches in San Antonio, Texas, since 1997 the Texas Diaper Bank has been working to meet the basic needs of vulnerable babies, children with disabilities and seniors. The organization's mission of: to address the diaper gap and its impact on individuals in crisis has led the organization to provide a continuum of basic needs services combined with educational opportunities that strengthen a family's self-reliance."
