Softball falls to Miami Ohio and Ball State in day two of Velvet Milkman Invitational

MURRAY, Ky. — The Bellarmine softball team completed day two at the Velvet Milkman Invitational, dropping games to Miami Ohio and Ball State for the second consecutive day.

The Knights fell to Miami Ohio 9-1 in their first game of the day, and were defeated by Ball State 14-4 in the second contest.

Game One

After playing Miami Ohio to close out Friday, the Knights faced the pre-season MAC favorite again to start the Saturday slate.

The Redhawks slowly but surely expanded their lead, scoring in each inning from the second through the sixth.  Miami Ohio led 4-0 going into the fifth inning, and a five-run burst ultimately sealed the game.

Eight of the Redhawks' 12 hits were extra-base knocks, including three home runs.  Bellarmine totaled three hits – singles from Olivia Bricker and Chloe Collins, along with a double from Abbey Nesnidal.

Anna Greenwell scored Bellarmine's lone run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.

Carson Goatley and Nesnidal pitched for Bellarmine, while Laurelai DePew earned the win in the circle for Miami Ohio.

Game Two

Bellarmine's offense was more active in game two, but an early wave of runs from Ball State proved to be too much to overcome.

The Cardinals scored nine runs in their first three trips to the plate, and added five runs over the fifth and sixth innings.

The Knights plated two runs in the third on a two-RBI triple from Megan Konermann.  The sophomore now leads Bellarmine with six RBI and picked the first triple of her career.

Bellarmine added another run in the fourth with two walks and a Ball State throwing error.  Konermann doubled to start the fifth, and her pinch-runner, Madison Davis, later came in on an Emily O'Dee sacrifice fly.

Konermann finished the game 2-3 with two extra-base hits, while Greenwell and O'Dee added singles.

Claire Lehmkuhler and Elli Jensen pitched for BU, while Alyssa Stramaglia claimed the win in the circle for Ball State.
