Austin Peay tops softball in Friday doubleheader

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Bellarmine softball team dropped a pair of low-scoring contest at Austin Peay on Friday, falling to the Governors 2-0 in each game of a doubleheader.

Game One

The Knights' first hit in game one came in the fourth inning with a double from Chloe Collins to right-center field.

Austin Peay was already up 2-0 at that point with a sacrifice fly and RBI triple off the bat of Kylie Campbell.

Bellarmine brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the fifth inning after a single from Olivia Bricker and hit-by-pitch from Audrey Magnus.  A fielder's choice, fly-out, and groundout ended the inning, however, with BU unable to get on the board.

Anna Greenwell's single in the sixth was Bellarmine's only hit the rest of the game, and Austin Peay locked up the series-opening win.

Carson Goatley had a fine outing in the circle, allowing just two runs over five innings, while Elli Jensen tossed a shutout sixth inning.

Jordan Benefiel, leading the ASUN in strikeouts, racked up six strikeouts for Austin Peay in a complete game victory for the Governors.

Game Two
Like game one, the Knights managed just three hits at the plate, but received solid pitching.

Austin Peay was shutout until the fifth, when leadoff hitter, Megan Hodum doubled down the left field line to drive home two runs and put APSU ahead 2-0.

Bellarmine's best chance to score came in the fourth when Greenwell led off the inning with a single down the left field line.  Two batters later, Collins singled to third base, and the Knights had first-and-second with just one out.  A fielder's choice and groundout ended the threat though, and BU had just two base-runners the remainder of the game.

Despite the loss, Lehmkuhler had another strong outing for the Knights in the circle, allowing just five hits over six innings.  Lehmkuhler has now allowed two earned runs or less in each of her last five outings.

Emberly Nichols went all seven innings for Austin Peay, earning the victory.

Bellarmine wraps up the series with APSU tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. ET (1:00 p.m. CT).  The action can be viewed on ESPN+ (subscription required).
