NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team probably felt as if it didn't take enough advantage of its numerous scoring chances in regulation time and two overtime sessions.
The Knights sure didn't make that mistake a third time when it came to the penalty-kick shootout.
On Thursday in the first round of the ASUN Championship at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex, seventh-seeded Bellarmine buried all four of its attempts while sixth-seeded Austin Peay missed twice, the latter clinching a 4-3 win in the shootout for the Knights and advancement into the quarterfinals.
The official result of the match is a draw. Bellarmine (5-11-3) advances to face three-seed and quarterfinal host Lipscomb at 2 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
After Austin Peay (9-7-3) scored in the 50th minute, junior forward
Lucy von Stefenelli leveled the contest in the 83rd minute after sinking a penalty kick resulting from a Governors foul in the box. It was her fifth goal of the season.
Neither team would score again in regulation time or the two overtime periods. Bellarmine undoubtedly viewed its one goal over the 110 minutes as a frustratingly misleading reflection of a Knights attack that produced 24 shots, half of which were on frame, and a dozen corner kicks.
However, Bellarmine couldn't have been more locked in when the PK session arrived. Junior midfielder
Alexa Orozco and freshman forward
Campbell Tippey matched APSU's makes on the first two attempts.
Bellarmine then went up 3-2 when APSU was wide right, and sophomore forward
Lauren Bingham sank her chance. The Governors answered but freshman defender
Mckenzie Price responded by putting the Knights back ahead 4-3.
Bellarmine wouldn't need a fifth attempt, as the Knights clinched the PK victory when the Governors clanged their final opportunity off the crossbar, triggering a raucous celebration by the Knights.
Under first-year head coach
Callie McKinney, Bellarmine made its first appearance in the ASUN Tournament since 2021. The Knights have advanced for the second time. They started the tournament in the quarterfinals in 2021 and moved into the semifinals after defeating FGCU in a PK shootout.
Bellarmine finished with a 24-13 advantage in shots, including 12-6 on frame.
