Bellarmine jumps a spot to 24th nationally

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Bellarmine University women's soccer team advanced one spot to the 24th position in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCCA) NCAA Division II poll.  The Knights played just one game last week, securing a 2-1 victory over the Maryville Saints.

Bellarmine has the nation's 15th best won-loss percentage, standing at 11-2 for a .846 percentage, and they are currently in second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with their 9-2 mark. The Knights have secured a spot in the GLVC postseason tournament, and with only two games remaining, Bellarmine is in prime position to host their opening round match.

Another encouraging sign for the Knights is their regional ranking of third, which bodes well for an NCAA Tournament invitation.

The 2009 Knights team has earned its victories through solid defense. Despite first in the conference in the in goals allowed, Bellarmine is dead last in the GLVC in saves, meaning that teams are not getting off very many shots against the stingy Knights defense.

When an opposing team does fire on goal, goalkeeper Amy Kunowski has been quite adept at preventing a score.  The freshman from Milwaukee, Wisc., owns an 84.8 save percentage, which ranks 31st in the nation.

Bellarmine wraps up its regular season with home games on Friday against Missouri-St. Louis and Sunday against Southern Indiana.  Game times are 3:55 p.m. and noon, respectively.
