SAINT LOUIS, Mo. (Apr. 24, 2009) -- Bellarmine's men's tennis team won 5-2 over Indianapolis in round one of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament before falling 4-5 to Drury in the second round.

The Knights, seeded fourth in the tourney, started strong in doubles as they took a 2-1 lead over fourth seeded Indianapolis.

Tyler Worley teamed with Paul Clark to defeat Kyle Prow and Werner Henning by a score of 8-5. The duo of Sathi Reddy and Todd Atcher also won in doubles, beating Jonathan Hack and Jeff Price 8-5.

The Knights extended their lead quickly, winning at the four through six positions to bring the match to a close. Clark, Reddy and Atcher each captured a win for Bellarmine in singles to give BU the five wins needed for the victory.

Nick Janssen-Bernard and Nathan Matthews were both leading in their respective matches when the contest was brought to a halt and Bellarmine declared the victor.

The Knights returned to the court at 1:00 p.m. for their second round match where they found a much tougher row to hoe against #1 seeded and 16th ranked Drury University.

Bellarmine enjoyed a 2-1 lead after doubles thanks in part to a win by their number one team Janssen-Bernard and Matthews who defeated Ivan Marevic and Nahom Serekeberhan 9-8, 1-0 (10-8). Bellarmine's other point came from a default win in the number three position as Drury did not put a team on the court for that matchup.

In singles, the Panthers proved why they are ranked #16 as they captured the 1 through 4 matchups against the Knights. Drury did not send out players for the 5 and 6 spots giving the Knights two more points by default.

The Panthers didn't need those two points, however, as their one doubles win and four singles wins gave them the 5-4 triumph over the Knights.

With the loss, Bellarmine drops into the consolation game, which will be played at 8:30 a.m. on Sat., April 25. The Knights will face Southern Indiana for third place honors.
