LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Bellarmine University's men's tennis team scored a dramatic 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match today at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
After falling behind 2-4 after doubles and the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles, Bellarmine dug in their heels and won do-or-die matches at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles. Freshman
Carlos Antonioli scored the decisive victory at No. 6 singles. With all other matches complete, the freshman from Brazil won the final two games of his match to secure the clutch 6-2, 6-4 victory.
In another dramatic moment of the match,
Tyler Worley's broken shoestring resulted in a several minute delay during his match in No. 4 singles. The delay came while the Bellarmine senior was waiting to serve down 5-6 with his opponent looking at break point to tie the match at one set apiece.
The fresh shoestring seemed to shore up not only Worley's shoe but his confidence as well, as he fought back to win the game and eventually the second set in a tiebreaker.
"I was extremely proud of our effort today," said Bellarmine Coach Todd Murphy. "Coming out of doubles down 2-1 to a strong GLVC opponent, we needed a team effort in singles. Our freshmen stood up to a big challenge today, and we showed the desire to hang in and fight to pull off a win.
"I couldn't ask for a better effort in singles today," Murphy added. I'm very proud of the team."
Bellarmine improves to 5-3 on the season and evens their GLVC mark at 1-1.
