LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The No. 5 Bellarmine Knights men's basketball team steamrolled the visiting Rockhurst Hawks 90-61 tonight in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest in Knights Hall.
The Knights were hitting on all cylinders as the host team jumped out to early leads of 12-0 and 17-1 and shot a hot 63.6 percent in the first half as they posted a 56-29 halftime lead. After the intermission, it was more of the same as the Knights bumped up the lead to 35 on several occasions before coasting in for the 29-point win.
For the second straight game,
Keisten Jones led the Knights in scoring, putting up 18 on 6-of-8 shooting. Jones was joined in double figures by
Jeremy Kendle (17) and
Chris Dowe, who posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The junior out of (Louisville) Eastern High School also dished out six assists and recorded a blocked shot and a steal while not committing a turnover.
The win upped Bellarmine's overall mark to 10-1 overall and 2-1 in league play. Rockhurst suffered its first conference defeat and fell to 5-6, 2-1 GLVC.
Bellarmine, which came into the contest the best shooting team in the nation, did nothing to hurt their ranking and finished the game connecting on 58.3 percent of the their shots, including 11-of-24 shooting from beyond the arc. About the only negative statistics for the Knights was hitting just 60 percent from the charity stripe.
The Knights return to action on Saturday afternoon as they face GLVC newcomer William Jewell College in a game scheduled for 3:15 p.m. The Cardinals, who lost in overtime to No. 11 Northern Kentucky tonight, come in to the Bellarmine contest 4-5, 1-2 GLVC.
