QUINCY, Ill. --- A goal late in the first half by the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year Sarah Franklin doomed the Bellarmine University women's soccer team's chances of repeating as GLVC Champions as the Knights fell to No. 15 William Jewell in the tournament's semifinal round on Friday night.
The Knights will now turn their attention towards the NCAA Tournament which begins next weekend. Heading into Friday's game the Knights were ranked third in the Midwest Region and will now wait to hear their fate when pairings are announced on Monday.
Bellarmine appeared in control of the game early on, getting several shots on frame in the first half, only to be turned away by WJC's Kelli Sontag. On the other side of the field, the Knights' defense locked up Franklin and the Cardinals, holding them without a shot on goal for the first 42 minutes.
Franklin took full advantage of her first opportunity though, striking the ball from 8 yards out on the left side to beat
Amy Kunowski for the game's lone goal.
The Knights owned statistical advantages in shots (14-9) and shots on goal (6-3), but were unable to register a goal for the first time this season. Kunowski made a pair of saves in the losing effort with Sontag stopping six shots to earn the win.
