Men's tennis splits matches with UIndy and St. Joseph's

4/9/2012 9:07:00 AM

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Bellarmine men's tennis team traveled north on I-65 for two matches over the Easter holiday break, facing Indianapolis on Friday and St. Joseph's on Saturday.  The Knights lost a narrow 5-4 decision to UIndy before getting an 8-1 victory over St. Joe's on Saturday.

BELLARMINE-UINDY RECAP:

"We came out really flat in doubles but we also have to give Indianapolis credit for their inspired play," said Bellarmine Coach John Mican as the Greyounds captured all three doubles matches.

Bellarmine came out and almost pulled out the victory with a solid perfomance in singles where they won four matches including Anton Rabinov taking down UIndy's number one player Trevor Cox, who is ranked No. 8 in the Midwest region and was coming off a win against the top-ranked player--Uno Lapimaa of Lewis.  The deciding match saw Alex Chanley and Alex Poe give it their all for over two and a half hours.  Alex Chanley was two points from the win several times but Poe fought him off each time finally prevailing in the third set tie-break.  "To say that Alex Chanley left everything he had on the court today would be an understatement," said Mican.

BELLARMINE-ST. JOE'S RECAP:

The Knights found themselves down in two doubles matches, but turned those around to win all three in doubles.  "We went on a roll from there," said Coach MIcan. "It was difficult to get motivated after the loss to Indy less than 15 hours earlier,  but we managed to turn things in our favor with a determined effort," Mican added.
