Five Knights and Coach Scott Davenport pick up GLVC postseason honors

INDIANAPOLIS - Bellarmine University's men's basketball team hauled in six postseason league accolades the Great Lakes Valley Conference announced today.  Major award winners included Coach of the Year Scott Davenport and Defensive Player of the Year Al Davis with Adam Eberhard and Rusty Troutman earning first team All-GLVC honors and Alex Cook and Ben Weyer being selected to the All-Freshman Team.

Davenport picks up his third GLVC Coach of the Year honor after guiding the Knights to a 25-3 record in the regular season and a sparkling 17-1 mark in league play. The Bellarmine coach, now in his 12th year, also won the honor in 2011 and 2012.

Davis is the second consecutive Knight to be named GLVC Defensive Player of the Year after George Suggs received the recognition last year. The league coaches honored Davis after he led the team in steals with 50 on the season and was the catalyst of a team defense that led the league in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense.

First team All-GLVC honoree Rusty Troutman earns the honor for the second year in a row after putting up solid numbers across the board in 2016-17:  13.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 3.4 apg. Troutman, a senior guard who also was nominated for the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award, also climbed toward the top of several Bellarmine all-time lists this season. He currently ranks No. 14 on the scoring list (1,553), No. 3 on the 3-pointers made list (201) and No. 8 on the steals list.

Eberhard, a sophomore, earns his first GLVC postseason accolade.  The forward from Evansville led the Knights in scoring (16.9 ppg), rebounding (7.1 rpg) and assists (3.8 apg) and is among the league's top 15 in seven different statistical categories. He was named as GLVC Player of the Week on Jan. 9.

Cook and Weyer make up one-third of the GLVC All-Freshman Team. The GLVC instituted the All-Freshman team this year and was designed to honor the top five freshmen in the league, but a tie expanded the selection to six players.

Cook led the Knights in blocked shots this season and ranked 12th in the league, swatting an average 0.86 shots per game. He was a solid contributor off the bench for Coach Davenport, averaging 6.8 points and four rebounds a game.

Weyer, who was slowed by a preseason foot injury, came on strong for the Knights this year. He finished the regular season fourth in the GLVC in 3-point shooting after making 50.8 percent (31 of 61). He also provided a lift off the bench averaging 6.9 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.

Southern Indiana's Jeril Taylor was named GLVC Player of the Year and Indianapolis' Tate Hall was picked as Freshman of the Year.
