NASHVILLE, Tenn. —
Austin Warner and
Hunter Spencer combined for a one-hitter as the Bellarmine University baseball team secured a 5-1 road victory over Trevecca Nazarene on Friday evening.
Warner (1-1) notched the win for Bellarmine (5-6) after allowing one earned run in 6.1 innings pitched while striking out eight. Ethan Harrison singled to lead off the fourth for Trevecca Nazarene (7-6), but that's the only hit the senior left-hander yielded.
In fact, that would be the lone hit the Trojans would accumulate. Sophomore left-hander
Hunter Spencer collected a save with 2.2 scoreless innings of relief in which he didn't allow a hit and struck out four while lowering his ERA to 0.64.
Bellarmine's offense matched its pitching consistency. The Knights amassed 11 hits and scored twice in the third and one run apiece in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.
Sophomore left fielder
Griffin Neuer continued to swing a hot bat, going 3 for 5 with three RBIs. Senior third baseman
Cole Metcalfe and sophomore second baseman
Trevor Lines both doubled twice, and junior first baseman
Nick Wright added two hits.
In the third, Lines doubled and senior center fielder
Jes Staples singled to set up Neuer, who laced a two-run double down the right field line. The run in the fifth was similar, as Lines doubled and Neuer drove him in with a base hit. Neuer has tallied a team-best 19 RBIs in 11 games.
Metcalfe had a two-out, RBI double in the seventh and the Knights tacked on a run in the eighth.
Visiting Bellarmine will meet Trevecca Nazarene again as the teams will engage in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
