Knights baseball rides 6-run sixth to victory over Tusculum in series finale

GREENVILLE, Tenn. — Bobby Brokamp provided some validation Sunday of why the publication Collegiate Baseball tabbed him in the preseason as a "Newcomer to Watch" in the Midwest Region.

The Bellarmine University freshman center fielder belted his first collegiate home run and added a two-run double during a six-run sixth inning as the visiting Knights captured a 10-7 victory over Tusculum.

In a second-straight three-game series to start the season, Bellarmine (2-4) notched a victory in the finale after dropping the first two contests. Junior left fielder Griffin Neuer matched Brokamp with three hits against the Pioneers (5-5) as the duo powered Bellarmine's 13-hit attack.

Brokamp racked up four RBIs, Neuer had two and junior shortstop Drew Greenwood added a pair while notching two hits. Freshman right fielder Casey Womack also chipped in two hits.

Bellarmine trailed 4-2 after four innings but tied it up in the fifth on Brokamp's first homer in a Knights uniform. The freshman sent a two-run shot to left center to score sophomore first baseman Tyler Neeley, who had singled.

Bellarmine kept its momentum from Brokamp's blast going in the sixth. Womack brought in the go-ahead run with an RBI infield single. After a pitching change, Brokamp drilled a two-run ground-rule double down the left-field line. Greenwood followed by lacing a two-run single through the left side, and Neuer blistered an RBI double to right to cap a six-run outburst that gave the Knights a 10-4 lead.

A three-run homer by pinch hitter Colby Skeen in the eighth cut Tusculum's deficit in half. In the ninth, Willie Poe entered for Bellarmine and walked the first batter, but the sophomore left-hander buckled down and retired the next three batters on a pop out, strikeout and fly out to record his first save of the season.

Freshman right-hander Duncan Amrein earned his first collegiate win after pitching 3.0 scoreless innings of relief. Amrein and fellow freshman reliever Ryan Henson combined to allow one run in 5.0 innings.
