RENSSELAER, Ind. — The visiting Bellarmine University baseball team was swept 13-4 and 10-9 by Saint Joseph's on Sunday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Bellarmine (21-13, 8-4 GLVC) and Saint Joseph's (21-11, 5-7) split the four-game series after each team swept a doubleheader. Sophomore designated hitter
Zac Wiley and junior catcher
Brady Pfaadt continued their power surges, each homering Sunday after both went deep twice Saturday.
Wiley now has seven homers this season and Pfaadt has six. Sophomore first baseman
Tyler Neeley added the second long ball of his season in the tail end. Bellarmine's 23 total homers in 2017 are already eight more than it had all of last year.
While Bellarmine scored twice in the first inning in the opener, Saint Joseph's countered with three runs in the second and put the game out of reach with nine in the third. The Pumas pounded three of their four homers in Game 1 in the frame.
Pfaadt and freshman center fielder
Bobby Brokamp had two hits apiece in the opener, with Pfaadt homering in the fourth-straight game in which he logged a plate appearance. He added a pinch-hit RBI single in the tail end.
Also in the finale, Neeley went 3 for 3 while Greenwood, Wiley and junior second baseman
Alex Ralph had two hits apiece.
Momentum shifted back and forth in the capper. Bellarmine trailed 4-0 and 6-2 before rallying to tie it at 6 in the seventh on Ralph's two-run double and Pfaadt's RBI single.
Saint Joseph's plated two runs in the eighth to lead 8-6, but the Knights responded with three runs in the ninth to seize the lead after Wiley's game-tying two-run homer and freshman right fielder
Casey Womack's go-ahead sacrifice fly.
Unfortunately for Bellarmine, the Pumas punched right back with two runs in the bottom half to win the game on Jeff Hightower's RBI single with two outs.
Bellarmine hosts Illinois Springfield in doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. First pitch is at noon (ET) both days.
