Teo scores twice as Knights women's soccer clips Hawks 2-1 in GLVC Tournament quarters

QUINCY, Ill. — Heading into this season, nobody on the Bellarmine University women's soccer team had experienced a victory over Quincy.

The Knights are now familiar with the feeling.

On Sunday at Legends Stadium, sophomore midfielder Natalie Teo scored just ahead of halftime and added another goal in the second half as fifth-seeded Bellarmine defeated the fourth-seeded Hawks 2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinals.

"That was a very good performance from our young ladies," Bellarmine Coach Chris Tinius said. "We handled tough, windy conditions and a good opponent with poise and put up a big win."

Bellarmine (10-5-1) will meet top-seeded Truman State at 8:30 p.m. (ET) Friday in Jeffersonville, Indiana, in the GLVC Tournament semifinals. The Bulldogs topped eight-seed Lewis, 3-1.

Senior midfielder Audrey Van Der Elst, junior forward Kenzi Gooley and senior forward Jordan Chlebowy recorded assists for Bellarmine, which reached double-digit victories for the 12th time in 13 seasons. The Knights also beat Quincy (10-6-2) 2-1 on Sept. 28 at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium. Bellarmine exacted a measure of revenge this year as the Hawks eliminated the Knights in penalty kicks in last season's GLVC Tournament and knocked them out of the DII NCAA Tournament.

The teams seemed headed for a scoreless deadlock at the intermission, but Bellarmine struck with 49 seconds left before halftime. Van Der Elst launched a corner kick toward the back post, and Teo banged in a header in traffic for a 1-0 lead.

Teo struck again early in the second half. In the 47th minute, Gooley worked the ball away from a defender and crossed to Chlebowy, who immediately relayed to an open Teo. She buried her second goal of the match and fourth of the season for a 2-0 lead. The latter goal marked Teo's third game-winner of the season.

"The goal right before halftime was obviously huge," Tinius said. "It was a great service from Audrey and then Nat got her head on it. The second one was good pressure from Kenz and then good composure from Chewy to find Nat with the extra pass."

Quincy cut its deficit in half in the 85th minute on a goal by Mo Rooney, but the Hawks couldn't manage the equalizer. That was the only shot on goal for Quincy. Bellarmine had a 5-1 advantage in that area. Overall, the Hawks had a 9-8 edge in shots.

"Defensively we were pretty solid and made sure not to take too many risks in these conditions," Tinius said. "That part was a team effort from front to back."
