JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — Rockhurst scored in overtime to hand the Bellarmine University women's soccer team a 1-0 loss in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament finals on a rainy Sunday night at the Woehrle Athletic Complex.
After a controversial foul call on five-seed Bellarmine (11-6-3) in the overtime, Cathy Rometti of seven-seed Rockhurst (11-7-2) sent a free kick from deep down the right sideline that found its way near the back post and was directed into the net by Maddie Dierkes with 2:20 left in the extra frame.
"That's a heartbreaking way to end things," Bellarmine Coach
Chris Tinius said. "I thought we did a lot of good things again, but the bite we've seen the last few games wasn't quite the same. We knew it was going to come down to a chance or two in these conditions, and Rockhurst took advantage of it."
Bellarmine scored both its goals inside the first 47 minutes of its 2-1 victory over four-seed Quincy in the quarterfinals and then racked up two inside the first 30 minutes of its 3-0 romp over top-seeded Truman State in the semifinals.
But as Tinius mentioned, Bellarmine generated very little in the attack in the finals and the rain probably didn't help matters. Sophomore midfielder
Samantha Ferry was inches away from a goal in the second half before her shot caromed off the crossbar, but that was the Knights' only serious threat.
At the same time, Rockhurst's attack didn't threaten very often either as the defenses largely commanded the match. The Hawks finished with a 10-9 edge in shots, including 5-2 on frame.
"Congrats to Rockhurst," Tinius said. "They are probably the best 7 seed in the history of a conference tournament, and we hope they win games for the GLVC (in the DII NCAA Tournament)."
