Knights baseball drops season opener as West Georgia builds off big first inning

CARROLLTON, Ga. — The No. 10 Bellarmine University baseball team opened the season Friday with a 15-2 loss to West Georgia at Cole Field.

Things couldn't have started any worse for Bellarmine (0-1) as West Georgia (1-4) batted around and scored six runs on six hits in the first inning. The Wolves added one run in the third, two in the fourth and three apiece in the seventh and eighth while racking up 16 hits.

Bellarmine recorded five hits. Junior catcher Chris Gambert launched his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth. The Knights scored their first run in the third on an RBI single by sophomore third baseman Jacob Mulcahy.

In addition to Gambert and Mulcahy, senior right fielder Zac Wiley, sophomore left fielder Matt Higgins and sophomore second baseman Justin Rouse had one hit each.

Senior left-hander Eddie Mathis (0-1) was saddled with the loss as Bellarmine used five pitchers.

The Knights and Wolves will play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday. They were originally scheduled to play single games on Saturday and Sunday, but inclement weather is projected for Sunday.
