Knights baseball defeated by Screaming Eagles

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Southern Indiana recorded 17 hits in defeating the Bellarmine University baseball team 12-7 on Tuesday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Knights Field.

Bellarmine (13-12, 6-6 GLVC) racked up 14 hits, but the Knights couldn't quite match the big-inning output of the Screaming Eagles (15-8, 8-3), who had five-run and three-run frames.

Bellarmine also had a five-run inning. It came in the third as the Knights took a 5-2 lead. Freshman designated hitter A.J. Arnold led off by walloping his first collegiate homer. Also in the inning, senior right fielder Zac Wiley roped an RBI double and sophomore shortstop Clayton Mehlbauer cracked a three-run double.

Southern Indiana matched the five runs in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead, one they never gave up. Bellarmine had some bad luck as a few flares dropped in for singles for the Screaming Eagles, who capitalized as Aaron Muler smacked a two-run double and Bryson McNay had a sharp single to drive in a run.

When USI then had a check-swing RBI single in a three-run seventh, it seemed pretty evident things weren't going to go the way of the Knights. It didn't help that Bellarmine grounded into three double plays.

Sophomore left fielder Matt Higgins had an RBI double in the fourth, and Wiley scored in the ninth after putting together back-to-back doubles with junior third baseman Deylen Miley. Higgins was a home run short of hitting for the cycle.

Higgins had three hits, Wiley clubbed two doubles and Miley, Mehlbauer and senior center fielder Alex Phillips also collected two hits each. Bellarmine used a pitcher-by-committee approach; senior right-hander Ethan Cleary struck out the side and junior right-hander Anthony Ethington and junior left-hander Shane Barringer joined him in throwing 1.0 scoreless inning apiece.

Bellarmine hosts Lincoln Memorial in a nonconference doubleheader starting at noon (ET) Wednesday.
