Gambert's 5-hit, 2-HR outing punctuates baseball's 13-2 triumph over UIndy

INDIANAPOLIS — The Bellarmine University baseball team delivered a dominant effort at the plate and on the mound Tuesday as the visiting Knights defeated Indianapolis 13-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Junior designated hitter Chris Gambert had a mammoth showing for Bellarmine (20-16, 11-10 GLVC) with a 5-for-6 outing that included a pair of home runs and five RBIs. The Knights piled up 18 hits against Indianapolis (19-13, 12-9) and captured two of the three games in the regular-season series against the Greyhounds.

Sophomore right-hander Brandon Pfaadt and junior left-hander Shane Barringer made sure the slugging in the game was one-sided. Pfaadt was primarily a starter last season but transitioned into the closer role this year. Against UIndy, the righty made his first start of 2019, but it was similar to long relief as he fired 3.0 shutout innings and struck out four. Barringer (3-1) tossed the final 6.0 innings, earning the win while allowing a single earned run and fanning five. The southpaw also notched the victory against the Greyhounds last week.

Gambert set the tone early for the offense's powerful performance when he swatted an opposite-field home run leading off the second inning. Gambert also delivered the exclamation point when he hammered a two-run homer in the ninth. The two long balls raised his season total to 11. He added RBI singles in the third and fourth.

Sophomore second baseman Justin Rouse launched his first collegiate homer, a two-run blast to right center in the seventh. He also had a two-run single in the fourth to give Bellarmine a 4-0 lead. His round-tripper made it 9-1.

Bellarmine scored in all but three innings. The biggest output came in a five-run fourth. The Knights kept adding to their advantage, scoring two runs each in the final three frames.

In addition to Gambert and Rouse, senior center fielder Alex Phillips collected three hits while sophomore left fielder Matt Higgins, senior right fielder Zac Wiley and sophomore catcher Alex Cleverly added two apiece. Cleverly drove in two runs.

Bellarmine hosts Truman State at noon (ET) on Saturday and Sunday in a three-game series, with the doubleheader unfolding the first day.
