FAIRFAX, Va. — Despite a pair of wins for
Cole Nance and
Eric Beck, Bellarmine fell three times at the Patriot Duals on Saturday.
The Knights first lost 22-16 in a back and forth matchup with the Cougars, then came short against Bucknell 39-2 and George Mason 36-3.
After a slow start against Averett in which Bellarmine trailed 13-0, the Knights rallied furiously.
Cole Nance (157) started the comeback, earning a 15-6 major decision win over Luke Masterson.
Devan Hendricks (165) followed with six points for BU as Alex Turley had to forfeit due to injury just over a minute into the match.
Eric Beck (174) then tied the dual with a 12-7 victory over George Moseley. It was 13-13 in team points when
Sam Schroeder (184) tallied Bellarmine's fourth straight individual win, topping Zion Carpenter 4-2. The Knights were up 16-13 before Averett ultimately responded. The Cougars grabbed a win by decision and fall in the 197 and 285 weight classes respectively to take the overall dual 22-16.
"There is plenty to grow and learn from today," Knights Head Coach
Ned Shuck said. "Our focus will be on improving individually in the positions we weren't sharp in. We'll continue to make some lineup changes as the guys fight to earn their spots and make it clear they are the best at their weight."
The next dual for Bellarmine came against Bucknell and was highlighted by Beck's 5-4 victory against Nolan Springer, earning the Knights' lone three points. A point was later deducted for a bench violation.
Nance came through with BU's three points in the third and final dual against George Mason, fighting for a 6-4 win by decision against Avery Bassett.
Nance and Beck lead the Knights with three wins each this season.
"The fight was there, now I just need to make them better wrestlers and help them tactically make better decisions in their matches," Shuck added. "We are excited to get back to work and are grateful for the next competition to be able to test ourselves again next week."
Next up for BU is the Purdue Duals on Sunday, Nov. 21 in West Lafeyette, Ind. The Knights will not face the host Boilermakers but go against Duke, Brown, and Northern Illinois starting at 9:00 a.m.
