Lipscomb rallies past baseball in series opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Lipscomb scored nine unanswered runs in erasing a large deficit to defeat the Bellarmine University baseball team 9-7 in ASUN action Thursday at Dugan Field.

Senior right-hander Deylen Miley recorded a career high in strikeouts for the second game in a row for Bellarmine (8-15, 4-6 ASUN), fanning 12 against Lipscomb (9-11, 3-4) in the series opener.

Senior left fielder Chris Gambert moved into a tie for third with Dewey Minton on the program's all-time home run list with his 31st career round-tripper, a two-run drive to the opposite field in the third.

Gambert's sixth long ball this season provided Bellarmine a 4-0 lead, and the Knights boosted the advantage to 7-0 after a three-run fourth that included a sacrifice fly by senior third baseman Josh Finerty, an RBI double by junior shortstop Clayton Mehlbauer and an RBI single by junior right fielder Jacob Mulcahy.

Lipscomb largely used two big innings to erase the 7-0 deficit and, ultimately, overtake Bellarmine. The Bisons scored four runs apiece in the fifth and the eighth, bookending those around a one-run sixth.

Three relievers combined to shut out Bellarmine over the last 5.0 innings, allowing only one hit in that span. Mehlbauer led the Knights with two hits.

Bellarmine will meet Lipscomb at 5 p.m. (ET) Friday in the second of the three-game series.
