Four-run third inning powers Knights to 7-4 win over North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. — Junior shortstop Clayton Mehlbauer recorded three RBI as the Bellarmine University baseball team picked up a 7-4 road win on Saturday afternoon over the North Alabama Lions in ASUN action at Mike D. Lane Field.

With the win, the Knights (11-24, 6-11 ASUN) snap a seven-game losing streak.

North Alabama (5-31, 4-13 ASUN) scored first in the bottom of the first inning when the Lions plated one run courtesy of a wild pitch. The Knights got on the board at the top of the second when junior utility Jacob Mulcahy singled, freshman first baseman Davis Crane reached second on back-to-back UNA errors, and Mehlbauer drove them both in on an RBI single put the Knights up 2-1.

Bellarmine carried the momentum into the third as Mulcahy, Crane, and Mehlbauer drove runners in on RBI singles in three straight at-bats. Crane then scored on an RBI single by senior catcher Patrick Arndt to give the Knights a 6-1 lead.

UNA scored one run in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to cut Bellarmine's lead to two, but could not get any closer. In the ninth, the Knights added an insurance run when freshman outfielder Will Aubel, pinch running for senior third baseman Josh Finerty, scored on another UNA error. Junior Reece Davis then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close out the win.

Bellarmine was led in hits by Mehlbauer and Mulcahy, both of whom recorded three. Overall, the Knights outhit the Lions 13-10 and were able to take advantage of five costly Lion errors.

Senior Jacob Nagel picked up the win for Bellarmine to move to 2-3 on the season, throwing five strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched.

Bellarmine and North Alabama will close out their weekend series Sunday at 1 p.m. (ET).
