LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In a Friday night heart-breaker at Knights Hall, Bellarmine wrestling fell to SoCon rival Davidson by a final score 20-19.
Bellarmine (1-12) slowly built its lead to 19-10 entering the final two matches, but a Davidson (2-5) pin in the final bout gave the Wildcats a one-point road victory.
"We were seconds away and one score away in multiple matches to secure a tech fall, or on the other side of it, not give up the bonus," Knights Head Coach
Ned Shuck said. "It feels terrible, and we hate losing, but these guys are fighting their hearts out. They are giving their team everything they have, and I couldn't be more proud of their fight."
The Knights again started strong with
Jack Parker (125) who wrestled to his second straight win. Parker topped Hale Robinson for a 14-4 major decision victory. The Wildcats evened the score 4-4 after their major decision win at 133, but Bellarmine took the next two matches.
Logan Hoskins (141) handled Nick Cambria 14-3 for his first major decision win, while
Mitch Collica (149) wrangled David Loniewski 7-3. At that point, the Knights led 11-4.
It was the type of night where the momentum swung back and forth, and Davidson answered with two wins in a row to make the score 11-10. All-time Bellarmine wins leader
Eric Beck had an answer himself though, putting together a dominant 15-0 tech fall win (3:23) over Anthony Spera.
Sam Schroeder (184) followed with an exciting 3-1 victory that came down to the final seconds against Steven Newell. The Wildcats had the final blow, however, earning a major decision win at 197 and the winning pin at heavyweight.
"It will continue to be my job to help them make the positional and tactical adjustments," Shuck added. "I am confident that they will continue to grow by consistently putting the work in. I love my team."
Bellarmine continues SoCon play at The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) next Friday Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Lexington, Va.
