FLORENCE, Ala. — North Alabama broke a tie with less than two minutes remaining to send the Lions to a 2-1 victory over the Bellarmine University women's soccer team Sunday in ASUN action at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex.
Junior midfielder
Emma Nicholson supplied her third goal of the season for Bellarmine (4-6-5, 1-4-3 ASUN). North Alabama (7-5-4, 3-3-2) scored early and then late in the second half as all three of the match's goals came after halftime.
After neither team found the net before the break, North Alabama threaded a pass to Alice Bussey inside the box, and she converted her sixth goal of the season in the 49th minute.
Bellarmine answered four minutes later. Nicholson turned on the burners, making a run of over 50 yards down the center of the field and lacing a left footer from 15 yards off the underside of the crossbar and into the net to knot the score at 1.
The teams seemed headed for a draw, but in the 89th minute, North Alabama won a Bellarmine goal kick at midfield and Goose Andrews got a clean run and ensuing shot from 20 yards, which she rocketed inside the far post for the game-winning goal.
North Alabama posted seven shots in each half and finished with a 14-5 advantage, including 7-3 on frame. The match marked Bellarmine's regular-season road finale.
The Knights conclude the regular season with three ASUN home games, the first of which is against FGCU at 7 p.m. (ET) Thursday.
