CORALVILLE, Iowa — The Bellarmine University wrestling team collected several wins at the prestigious Soldier Salute on Friday and Saturday at Xtream Arena.
Sophomore
Zac Cowan (149), senior
Devan Hendricks (174) and sophomore
Thadd Huff (285) advanced to the quarterfinal round.
Cowan notched a 10-8 decision over Iowa's Joel Jesuroga and defeated Nebraska's Scott Robertson by major decision, 16-6. Hendricks, who placed seventh, posted a 4-1 decision over North Carolina's Marcus Murabito in his first match and also beat Iowa's Will Carano 4-2. Huff downed Columbia's Vincent Mueller 8-3 in his opening-round match.
Freshman
Damion Ryan (125) opened by defeating Minnesota's Quincy Hulverson by major decision, 13-4, and later edged Navy's Hayden Benter 6-5. Freshman
Trayce Eckman (133) outlasted Wyoming's Josh Kyle 20-17 in his first bout.
Freshman
Grant O'Dell (165) picked up two wins by major decision, defeating Minnesota's Tim Stapleton 13-4 and Columbia's Kyle Mosher 10-2. Freshman
Jeb Prechtel (157) pinned Columbia's Jaden Le for another Knights victory, and freshman
Andrew Liber (197) added another win to BU's ledger after taking down VMI's Josh Evans 7-3.
In the "Silver Brackets," freshman
Micah Medina (125C) defeated Hulverson 8-5 and Eckman notched a win at 133B. Cowan (149D) earned a 12-5 win over Navy's Nick Vafiadis, and Prechtel (157C) beat VMI's Josh Yost 14-9.
Junior
Cole Nance (165A) pinned Navy's Mason Collins, and freshman
Evan Grazzini (184B) defeated Iowa's Aidan McCain 7-3. Sophomore
Sam Schroeder (184C) posted a 10-1 major decision over Nebraska's Ethan Deleon, Liber (197A) triumphed 7-5 over Iowa State's Rowan Udell and Huff (285B) once again defeated Mueller, this time 4-2.
Bellarmine will compete Friday and Saturday in the National Duals at Northern Iowa.
