Women's soccer drops ASUN opener at Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Austin Peay in its ASUN opener Thursday at Morgan Bros. Soccer Field.

Freshman midfielder Rachel Skyberg scored her second goal of the season for Bellarmine (3-3-2, 0-1 ASUN). Austin Peay (3-5-1, 1-0) scored once in each half and held off the Knights' comeback attempt.

Austin Peay took a 2-0 lead. In the 22nd minute, Ellie Dreas converted off a cross from Carolyne Young. Aniyah Mack then pushed in a rebound off a save of her initial attempt in the 55th minute.

Bellarmine cut its deficit in half in the 75th minute. Skyberg received a pass near the top of the box, dribbled backward, reversed field back toward the box and rifled a shot from 20 yards that banged into the net off the bottom of the crossbar.

Austin Peay followed with a pair of near misses, the first a mishit from close range that was a golden opportunity to restore a two-goal lead. Bellarmine nearly made the Governors pay — with less than three minutes remaining, APSU goalkeeper Katie Bahn made a sprawling save on a shot from the left wing by senior forward Brielle Heuglin, with freshman forward Lauren Bingham free on the backside for a potentially easy rebound goal if Bahn hadn't made a clean grab.

Bellarmine finished with a 13-8 advantage in shots, including 9-6 on frame. The Knights attempted six shots in the first half and seven in the second.

Bellarmine will host Lipscomb at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
