LOUISVILLE, Ky. — FGCU edged the Bellarmine University women's soccer team 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in Atlantic Sun Conference play at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
All three goals scored in the contest between FGCU (5-1-5, 2-0-2 ASUN) and Bellarmine (3-6-2, 1-2-1) were netted in the first half. After the Knights equalized the match at 1, the Eagles answered less than a minute later, and that stood as the game-winning goal.
Kaitlin Gabelman tallied her fifth goal of the season in the 25th minute to open the scoring for FGCU. Sophomore forward
Makenzie Simpson leveled the contest in the 38th minute after tapping in a cross in heavy traffic from freshman forward
Brooklyn Donohue for her second goal of the season.
FGCU responded 52 seconds later, as Ava Russell restored the Eagles' lead on her second goal of the year. Neither team located the net again after the break.
FGCU finished with a 14-9 advantage in shots, but they were even at five apiece on frame.
Bellarmine will continue ASUN play at 7 p.m. (ET) Thursday at Queens.
