LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader against Eastern Illinois.
In game one, Bellarmine fell 4-2 despite a late rally in the top of the seventh inning. Trailing 3-0 entering the frame, Cole Huett led off the inning with a home run before Logan Murphy added a solo shot later in the inning. The comeback was cut short as Eastern Illinois reliever James Geshel closed the game to earn the save. Panthers starter Bryce Riggs went six innings, allowing two hits while striking out seven.
Game two was a different story as the Knights' offense applied steady pressure, recording 14 hits and scoring in seven different innings to secure an 8-2 victory.
On the mound, Deaton Oak earned the win after tossing six innings and allowing two runs. The bullpen handled the rest as Presley Monteforte delivered two scoreless innings with three strikeouts before Cade Rusch struck out two in a clean ninth inning.
Offensively, Luke Scales led the Knights with a home run in the fourth inning and finished with two hits, two RBI and three runs scored. Scales also added three stolen bases, helping create scoring opportunities throughout the game. The home run marked his team-leading fifth of the season.Cole Huett also contributed an RBI single in the third inning before adding a solo home run in the eighth, his second home run of the day after going deep in the first game of the doubleheader.
Sawyer Pace, Logan Murphy, and Bryce Anderson also recorded key hits as Bellarmine maintained offensive pressure throughout the game.
The Knights will host Butler on Tuesday at 2 p.m. ET. The game will also be streamed on ESPN+.
