CLARKSVILLE, Tn. – Bellarmine softball suffered two five inning losses in a series opening doubleheader at Austin Peay on Friday, falling 8-0 and 15-0 at Cathi Maynard Park.
In the series opener, the Knights and Governors were locked in 0-0 stalemate for three and a half innings.
Bellarmine flashed the leather early. In the second inning, senior
Jacklyn Zuege made a diving play to snag a line drive before making the throw to first for a double play. Moving into the third, senior
Madison Davis chased down a soft fly ball, making a diving catch in foul territory before getting back to her feet to gun out the runner trying to reach second for another double play.
Austin Peay broke the game open in the home half home of the fourth, exploding for eight runs. The Governors put up two home runs in the inning before shutting down the Knights in the fifth to secure the 8-0 mercy rule win.
Game two was much of the same. Austin Peay burst onto the scoreboard in the first, putting up seven runs on seven hits, including another two home runs. The Governors added on four more runs in each of the second and third innings to push the lead to 15-0 before cruising to a second five inning win.
Up next, Bellarmine and Austin Peay will close out the series on Saturday, April 4 at 1 pm E.T.
