Chase Broughton

Former All-American Chase Broughton was hired as the Bellarmine University men’s head cross country/track and field coach in January of 2019.

The 2023 season will be his fifth in cross country at Bellarmine, while the 2023-24 track and field season will be his sixth with the Knights.

In the 2022 cross country season, Bellarmine had 18 performances that ranked in the program's all-time 50 in the 8k, including six of the top 8 and eight of the top 12. Six of the top-9 performances in the program's 8k performance list were delivered in 2022. The Knights placed fifth of 14 at the ASUN Championship. In the 2022-23 track and field season, Bellarmine set 12 new overall program records and 15 new freshman records between the indoor and outdoor campaigns. Jackson Gordon was named the ASUN Outdoor Most Outstanding Freshman

The youthful 2021 cross country squad was a nascent group, delivering a sixth-place finish at the ASUN Championship after being predicted to finish 10th in the preseason. The Knights posted eight times in the program's all-time top 35 in the 8k. They also had six harriers earn spots in the top 18 of the 8k performance list. Chase Atkins was named to the ASUN All-Freshman Team. The Knights' 2021-22 track and field campaign was distinguished by the setting of eight combined indoor and outdoor freshman records.

In 2020-21, Bellarmine's first in Division I and the ASUN Conference, Broughton's track and field squad set 13 new program records between the indoor and outdoor seasons. In the cross country season, Nick Lewis secured ASUN All-Freshman Team recognition.

In 2019-20, Benton Stone received Division II All-America honors in the pole vault. That accomplishment was preceded by Michael Brizendine earning GLVC Freshman of the Year honors and Reid Masterson garnering All-GLVC laurels in cross country. 

In 2018-19, Broughton's first track and field campaign at Bellarmine, Logan Greco (mile) and Joe Drabot (3000) won GLVC indoor titles, the first indoor conference championships for the program since 2014. Drabot followed by winning a GLVC title in the 1500 in the outdoor season.

Before arriving at Bellarmine, Broughton spent two seasons as an assistant cross country and track and field coach at Southern Indiana. USI’s men’s cross country team captured the GLVC Championships title in both 2017 and 2018, as well as earned berths in the NCAA Championships both years. The Screaming Eagles’ women’s cross country team secured the GLVC Championships title in 2017.

Including track and field honors, Broughton coached 38 All-GLVC, 12 All-Midwest Region and two All-American award winners at Southern Indiana.

Broughton was a highly acclaimed student-athlete at Southern Indiana. Between cross country and track and field, he amassed five All-America accolades, 11 All-Midwest Region acknowledgements and nine All-GLVC plaudits. He was a six-time conference champion. In addition, Broughton earned Academic All-America honors and was named GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s cross country for 2016.

Broughton garnered All-America laurels in cross country in 2016 and was both an All-GLVC and All-Midwest honoree that season and in 2017.

In track and field, he earned three All-America acknowledgements in 2017 (distance medley relay, 3000, 3000 steeplechase) and one in 2016 (3000 steeplechase). Broughton reaped All-Midwest Region recognition on three occasions in the distance medley relay and the 3000 steeplechase, on two occasions in the mile and on one occasion in the 3000. He was a three-time GLVC champion in the distance medley relay and won one conference title in the mile, 3000, 3000 steeplechase and 5000.

Broughton earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in sports management from USI, doing so in the spring of 2016 and the summer of 2017. He finished the master’s program with a 4.0 GPA.
