Alaska tournament recap: Volleyball takes two out of three to open season

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Bellarmine University volleyball team opened the 2010 campaign by winning two out of three matches in the Nanook Classic this weekend at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

 

Bailey BredenbeckCorp and Krista Gibson received All-Tournament honors.  Cal State University East Bay took home the tournament trophy by winning all three of its matches.

 

The Knights (2-1) will host Kentucky State University on Tuesday evening in Knights Hall.  First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.  Bellarmine will play a total of ten regular season matches in the friendly confines, which will host the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championship in December.

Cal State University East Bay 3, Bellarmine 0 (Friday)

Gibson led the Knights with 11 kills and a .348 attack percentage, while Emily Beckman added a double-double with ten kills and ten defensive digs, but the Knights fell short in a 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 sweep to the Pioneers in the opener.

 

In her first collegiate match, BredenbeckCorp recorded 23 assists and only one ball handling error.  Lauryn Hyman delivered 11 assists for the match.

Bellarmine 3, University of Alaska Fairbanks 1 (Saturday)

Gibson powered the Knights with game highs 18 kills and three service aces as Bellarmine silenced the host Nanooks 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 for their first win of the season.

 

BredenbeckCorp had 43 assists and two set errors.  Paula Byrns played a role in five of Bellarmine's seven blocks for the match, while holding UAF to a .157 attack percentage in the contest.

Bellarmine 3, University of Charleston 0 (Saturday)

The Knights took advantage of a slow start by the Golden Eagles and never looked back in a 25-17, 25-23, 25-23 victory to clinch second place in the round robin tournament. 

 

Bellarmine recorded a .467 attack percent in the first set, converting 16 kills and two errors.  Byrns has an incredible .769 attack percentage with 10 kills and no errors on 13 attacks.  She was matched in the kills department by Beckman, who also scored a pair of service aces.

 

BredenbeckCorp led all players with 27 assists, while Kaitlan Harris tallied 12 digs and two aces for the match.
