Egan scores twice as No. 18 Knights cruise to win over Pumas

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Soggy conditions didn't lead to a sloppy performance from the Bellarmine University women's soccer team.

Compliments of senior forward Darcy Egan, the 18th-ranked Knights scored twice inside the first 12 minutes as they cruised to a 3-0 win Friday over Saint Joseph's at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

Junior forward Mary Beth Gorham pocketed a goal and an assist for Bellarmine (9-0-1, 6-0-1 GLVC), which recorded its ninth shutout in 10 matches. Junior midfielder Lauren Holder contributed an assist against the Pumas (1-8-1, 1-6) as the Knights blanked their fifth straight opponent.

"This was a good win to start the weekend," BU Coach Chris Tinius said. "We asked our attacking players to be sharper this week, and I thought the group that started the game did a great job with that. Things looked more purposeful, and it was nice to get an early cushion to operate with."

That early cushion started after Gorham made a pass to Egan that the Saint Joe's goalkeeper attempted to pick off but could not corral in the wet conditions. Egan poked the loose ball into the net for a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.

It was Egan's first goal of the season, and her second one came less than two minutes later. A pass toward the center of the box was deflected by a Pumas defender directly toward Egan, who laced her shot into the left side of the net for a 2-0 advantage in the 12th minute.

Bellarmine took that lead into halftime, and the Knights added their third goal in the second half. Holder crossed to Gorham on the left flank, and she deposited her eighth goal of the season and 31st of her career. It was Holder's fifth assist of the season.

"Mary Beth certainly looked more refreshed, and it was great to get Darcy on the score sheet to hopefully build her confidence," Tinius said. "We need to dry off, warm up and be ready to regroup."

Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Smith and senior keeper Kate Fitzgerald combined for the shutout. Bellarmine held a 10-7 advantage in shots, including 5-3 on frame.

"We still need to improve at keeping our foot on the gas, but keeping another clean sheet in these conditions was great," Tinius said. "St. Joe's got a couple good looks and both teams had to deal with bouncing and skipping balls in this weather. I thought we managed the conditions pretty well."

Bellarmine will host Indianapolis at noon (ET) on Sunday.
