LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The formula that the Bellarmine University women's soccer team has used to win so many matches was accessed again Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
As they have so often this season, the undefeated and 18th-ranked Knights delivered a smothering effort defensively and took advantage of a
Lauren Holder-
Mary Beth Gorham connection to post a 1-0 victory over Indianapolis in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Bellarmine (10-0-1, 7-0-1 GLVC) is now one victory or tie away from tying last season's school-record 12-game unbeaten streak. The Knights' defense notched its 10th shutout in 11 matches and has still yielded only one goal this season.
"This was a good, workmanlike effort to close out the weekend," BU Coach
Chris Tinius said. "I thought we did a very good job of possessing the ball for longer stretches of the game today. We weren't overly dynamic in the first half, and we puttered some in the final third or settled for less quality chances. In the second half, we had fewer chances, but I believe every one ended up on goal."
One from Gorham ended up in the goal against the Greyhounds (1-7-2, 0-6-2).
Following a scoreless tie at halftime, Gorham was the recipient of a splendid through ball from Holder, who split a few UIndy defenders and spotted her teammate racing toward the right side of the box. Gorham ripped a shot inside the far post for a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute. It was her ninth goal of the season and 32nd of her career. Holder registered her sixth assist.
"Mary Beth had a clinical finish after another good ball from Lauren," Tinius said.
Meanwhile, Bellarmine's defense racked up its sixth consecutive shutout. UIndy didn't make it easy, accumulating eight shots, with two coming on frame. Sophomore goalkeeper
Taylor Smith made a clutch save in a one-on-one with a Greyhounds attacker and, on another play, sophomore defender
Kelsey Lober closed hard to block what initially appeared would be a wide open look for UIndy from dangerous distance.
"Obviously Taylor, the back four and team defending was good enough today with another shutout," Tinius said. "(Junior midfielder)
Sydney Kraus and (junior defender)
Lexy Hazle are two players that always play well, but don't necessarily get the pub due to their positions. We had many good performances in supporting positions today, but I thought those two were as good as they've been all year."
Bellarmine totaled 11 shots, with five coming on goal. The Knights will head to Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday and Lewis on Sunday.
"I keep saying that the league has parity as far as the type of teams and level of play, but based on the standings the back half of our conference schedule is pretty loaded," Tinius said. "We'll need to keep moving forward in training to be ready for what lies ahead."
