No. 22 Knights women's soccer ties Drury 1-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The No. 22 Bellarmine University women's soccer team tied Drury 1-1 on Sunday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

The Panthers (4-8-2, 2-8-2 GLVC) tied the match with a little over 2 minutes left in regulation. Bellarmine (10-1-3, 8-1-3) received a first-half goal from sophomore midfielder Erika Laws off an assist from sophomore midfielder Jordan Chlebowy.

"That's been a long time coming," Bellarmine Coach Chris Tinius said. "We've made a habit of being able to pull things out late the last couple of years and that has made it hard to convince ourselves that we have a lot of things we need to be consistently better at. It's nothing we haven't talked about, but it finally caught up with us."

Laws' first goal of the season came in the 28th minute. She sank a shot from 12 yards off a feed from Chlebowy.

The score stayed the same at halftime and remained that way through the vast majority of the second half. However, Drury knotted it up with 2:03 left as Kayla Day found Kerri Morris in front of the goal for a header that found the net.

"I thought Drury played hard and very focused on what they wanted to do," Tinius said. "We did in spurts but not in a consistently focused and clean way. It was disappointingly obvious how much faster and harder we played in the two minutes after their goal to end regulation. If we can't demand that of ourselves more often, it's going to be a messy two weeks to end the season."

Drury attempted five shots over the two overtimes, while Bellarmine took four. Overall, the Knights held a 23-9 advantage in shots. Senior goalkeeper Hannah Poteet had five saves.

"On the bright side, I thought Hannah Poteet was great today," Tinius said. "That really should have been a loss if not for a couple brilliant saves.

"We'll enjoy a little time here with fall break and try to regroup and get better."

Bellarmine plays at Illinois Springfield on Friday before hosting McKendree on Sunday.
