No. 25 Knights women's soccer pounds Pumas 4-0

RENSSELAER, Ind. — Six different players helped to account for goals as the No. 25 Bellarmine University women's soccer team coasted to a 4-0 road win over Saint Joseph's on Sunday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Freshman forward Olivia Taylor scored twice for Bellarmine (8-1-1, 6-1-1 GLVC) against the Pumas (0-6-2, 0-5-2), while senior midfielder Josie Metzger and senior defender Lexy Hazle added one goal apiece. Taylor, Metzger, sophomore midfielder Polly Marino, senior forward Mary Beth Gorham and senior midfielder Lauren Holder each tallied an assist.

"On the weekend, we had a variety of people step up with goals and assists, which was awesome to see," Bellarmine Coach Chris Tinius said. "At halftime today, we talked about trying to come out and put the game away and our three attacking workhorses (Gorham, Holder and Taylor) combined for some good stuff to get that done.

"That was a very good, businesslike approach and performance from our team today. We stayed organized in some slippery conditions. Our movement was more purposeful and we finished some good goals."

Bellarmine was credited with double assists on the team's first and final goals. Metzger got the Knights on the board in the 10th minute when she converted off a Taylor-Marino combination. Taylor would later cap the scoring in the 65th minute when she was the recipient of a Gorham-Holder combination.

In between, Bellarmine took a 2-0 lead in the 25th minute when Hazle drilled a shot from outside the box, and Taylor bumped the advantage to 3-0 in the 53rd minute with the first of her two goals off a feed from Metzger. Taylor now tops the Knights with six goals, while Metzger and Hazle each netted their first goals of the season. Holder registered her team-best sixth assist.

"Olivia continues to be great for us," Tinius said. "It's fun to watch her in combination with Lauren and Mary Beth, and I think they would tell you it's nice to have a complement of people shouldering the load."

Bellarmine churned out 22 shots, including 11 on goal, while holding Saint Joseph's to five attempts, with two coming on frame. Senior goalkeeper Hannah Poteet and junior goalie Taylor Smith combined for the shutout.

"Two shutouts this weekend was also good to see since we haven't gotten through a weekend with that yet, especially in some slippery conditions both days where it wouldn't have been a shock to see something end up in the back of your net," Tinius said.

Bellarmine hosts Rockhurst and William Jewell next weekend.
