FRANKFORT, Ky. — Senior forward
Sarah Galvin posted a double-double and the No. 8 Bellarmine University women's basketball team pulled away from Kentucky State in the third quarter of a 65-48 road victory on Wednesday at the Exum Center.
Galvin tallied game highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds for Bellarmine (4-0), which outscored the Thorobrettes (3-2) 20-8 in the third quarter. Junior guard
Raven Merriweather chipped in 10 points and four assists.
Bellarmine limited Kentucky State's Brittani Rizzi to only three points on 1-for-9 3-point shooting one game after she drilled 13 3-pointers and scored 41 points. The Thorobrettes shot 17.6 percent (3 for 17) from long range and 30.9 percent overall.
At 39.3 percent overall and 23.1 percent (3 for 13) from 3-point land, Bellarmine didn't have the hot hand either. However, the Knights did force Kentucky State into 31 turnovers and converted those into 32 points. Galvin and senior guard
Serena Sandusky had three steals apiece, and the Knights accumulated 16 thefts overall.
A 3-pointer from Merriweather gave Bellarmine a 12-10 lead after the first quarter, and the Knights built a 10-point advantage in the second period before owning a 31-25 edge at halftime. Bellarmine took control for good in the third quarter with a 9-0 run that boosted the lead to 15. The surge was capped by a 3-pointer from senior guard
Whitney Hartlage and a layup from Galvin.
A steal by Galvin and feed to Curry pushed the lead to 21. The Knights then cruised to the victory in the fourth quarter as their lead never dipped below 14. Their first three victories were all in tight contests, including a pair of overtime games.
Bellarmine plays two games this weekend in the USI Thanksgiving Classic in Evansville, Indiana. The Knights meet Michigan Tech on Saturday and Young Harris on Sunday. Both games tip off at 1 p.m. (ET).
