Knights split first day at Cougar Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Bellarmine University softball team split the first day of the Cougar Classic hosted by Columbus State University in Georgia on Friday.  The Knights faced ninth-ranked Georgia College (7-0) in the first game and went toe-to-toe with the top 10 team before the Bobcats scratched across a run in the bottom of the eighth to secure the 1-0 victory.  In game two, the Knights (5-3) got their bats going and defeated the host school 7-5.

The Cougar Classic features seven teams playing in 15 different games over three days.  The Knights will play four more games this weekend, competing against Georgia College and Columbus State again as well Young Harris University.

Game 1 BU 0, GC 1 (BOX SCORE)

The Knights and the Bobcats were knotted up at zero for seven and two-thirds innings before Georgia College's Taylor Campbell singled to center field, pushing Baylee Hall across home plate to win the game in the bottom of the eighth.

The game only saw a grand total of nine hits, three of which came from Bellarmine.  It was a battle of the pitchers as senior Ally Foster delivered 106 pitches including four strikeouts.  Junior pitcher Carly Lewis sent seven Knights back to the dugout by virtue of the "K."

Game 2 BU 7, CSU 5 (BOX SCORE)

Bellarmine jumped to an early lead that it would never give up in the bottom of the second, scoring six of their seven runs.

Megan Bretz was the first to score for the Knights off a wild pitch from the Cougar's Peyton Sorrells while Katie Stamper was at bat.  Stamper would then deliver a single to left center field, scoring Lillie Nitzken and Olivia Russell.  Foster delivered the big blow of the innning with a 3-run homer to left center that put the Knights up 6-0.

The Cougars immediately answered back in the top of the third, scoring all five of their runs with two outs in the inning.

Calli Star's single to right field and two errors by the Knights pushed two Cougars across home plate.  McKenzie Fagioli then singled to left field to knock in Star.

Kailey Boone doubled, to bring CSU within two of the Knights as Fagioli scored.  A single from Rachel Rhodes would then score Boone making it a one run game.

Bellarmine Coach Renee Hicks then called on Foster to relieve Marlee Tevis in the circle, and the righthander secured the final out of the inning as the Knights held onto its 1-run lead.

Stamper provided an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot to left field.

Foster was credited with the win, allowing only one hit in four and two-thirds innings of relief.

Stamper led the Knights going 3-for-3, collecting 3 RBIs and adding two runs to the scoreboard.  Foster went 2-for-3 at the plate.

The Knights will face the Cougars again Saturday after taking on the Young Harris Lions 2 p.m.
