EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The visiting Bellarmine University baseball team notched its first Great Lakes Valley Conference victory by riding sophomore left-hander
Hunter Spencer to a 6-3 win over Southern Indiana in Saturday's opener before the Screaming Eagles captured a 10-6 victory in the tail end despite the Knights erasing a six-run deficit.
Southern Indiana (14-8, 3-1 GLVC) took three of four in the series from Bellarmine (9-11, 1-3), which struggled offensively Friday but was much more productive on Saturday as the Knights tallied 21 hits over the two games.
In the first game, Spencer (3-1) earned the win after allowing no earned runs over 6-plus innings pitched. He struck out three and lowered his ERA to 1.88. USI scored three unearned runs in the seventh off Spencer, but senior right-hander
Alex Mercer, in his first appearance of the season after an injury sidelined him, came on to strike out the side and record the save.
Sophomore left fielder
Griffin Neuer, senior third baseman
Cole Metcalfe, sophomore shortstop
Drew Greenwood and sophomore second baseman
Trevor Lines each recorded two hits for Bellarmine. Greenwood and junior first baseman
Nick Wright collected two RBIs apiece.
Bellarmine scored three runs on five hits in the third. Wright and Greenwood both had RBI singles following base hits from Lines, Neuer and Metcalfe.
The Knights added three more runs in the sixth, although they needed only one hit to do it. Greenwood had a two-run single, and BU capitalized on erratic USI pitching in boosting the lead to 6-0.
In the second game, sophomore catcher
Brady Pfaadt went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for Bellarmine, while sophomore right fielder
Alex Ralph was 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Southern Indiana scored six runs in the first inning, but Bellarmine scored twice in the second and four runs in the fifth to tie it. Ralph cracked a two-run double in the second, and Pfaadt's two-run single knotted the score at 6 in the fifth after an RBI double by freshman pitcher
Alex Phillips.
Bellarmine was unable to score again after mounting the comeback. USI, meanwhile, scored twice in the sixth and seventh to pull away en route to the split.
Bellarmine hosts Missouri-St. Louis on Monday and Tuesday, with the games starting at 3 p.m. (ET) each day.
