Knights cap off the regular season with a Senior Day sweep of Maryville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A dramatic walk off homer by senior Tabby Shewmaker highlighted the clutch sweep of Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Maryville University (36-12, 20-10 GLVC) Sunday at Knights Field.  Ally Foster and Madeline Kurtz both picked up complete game shutouts, 4-0 and 9-0 respectively.  The Knights' three seniors were honored and each had incredible days.

The official bracket for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament will be released later tonight, but Bellarmine (32-24, 19-11 GLVC) will likely be the sixth seed and take on the three seed Southern Indiana Friday at noon in Peoria, Illinois.

Game 1 BU 4, MU 0 (HTM BOX SCORE)

In the bottom of the first, Maryville intentionally walked Foster, and she advanced to second on Kelly Ely's single up the middle.  Rachel Fox's single to center drove in Foster and advanced Ely to third.  A wild pitch allowed Ely to run home and put the Knights up 2-0.  A single from Megan Bretz followed by another single from Amy Feie pushed Fox home for a 3-0 lead.

The closest Maryville came to scoring was in the top of the fifth when Ashley Marks singled to center field and rounded the bases on an error, but was tagged out at home plate by catcher Ciara Incorvati after a near perfect throw from left fielder Rachel Fox and a near perfect relay from shortstop Erica Knollman.

Bellarmine added to their scoring in the bottom of the fifth.  Olivia Russell continued her weekend hot streak with a single up the middle, advancing to second on a wild pitch.  A throwing error by the third baseman for the Saints allowed Ely to reach and advance to second while Russell ran home for the final run of the game.

Foster picked up the win in the circle, breaking the Bellarmine single season pitching wins record with 21.  Fox led the Knights going 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a run.

Game 2 BU 9, MU 0 (HTM BOX SCORE)

The Knights continued their domination in game two, getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second.  Feie's single to right center, and Shewmaker's single through the left put runners on first and second as Knollman stepped to the plate.  On the first pitch, she sent the ball sailing over the left field fence for a three-run homer to give Bellarmine the lead.

Maryville struggled to get hits while the Knights added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth.  Bretz singled and advanced to second when Russell was hit by a pitch.  The bases were loaded after Foster was intentionally walked again.  Ely's single to left was enough for Bretz to make it home safely, putting BU up 4-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Melissa Hammer led off with a single, advancing to second on an error by the center fielder.  She later reached third on Feie's sacrifice bunt.  Shewmaker then popped up a bunt that ended in a perfect position between the pitcher and the catcher.  She legged it out for a base hit while Hammer ran home to put the Knights up 5-0.

Bellarmine poured on the runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Foster was intentional walked, Ely drew a walk, and both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch.  Hammer's sacrifice fly allowed Foster to slide home and Ely to advance to third.  Feie's long single to center field pushed Ely home and set the stage for a dramatic ending to Senior Day.  Shewmaker dug into the batter's box with two outs and a runner on.  The senior from Harrodsburg worked the count full then lifted a fly ball to deep left field. Maryville left fielder Kelsey Martin drifted back to make a play on the ball but ran into the fence as the ball sailed out of the park to seal the win and "run rule" Maryville 9-0.

Kurtz recorded the complete game win, allowing only three hits.  Shewmaker led the team going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs.  Feie, Hammer and Ely each went 2-for-3 with an RBI apiece.
