Knights record another GLVC sweep against Wisconsin-Parkside

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University softball team swept Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent Wisconsin-Parkside (4-31, 1-18 GLVC) Saturday at Knights Field.  The visiting team on the scoreboard, the Knights dominated the scoring of both games, 6-0 in game one and 5-0 in game two.  Senior Ally Foster took the lead in all-time wins in Bellarmine history with 59 careers wins in the circle.

The Knights (23-21, 12-8 GLVC) take the field at home Sunday to face GLVC opponent Lewis University.  The doubleheader is set to begin at noon.

Game 1 BU 6, UWP 0 (HTM BOX SCORE)

Bellarmine did the majority of their scoring in the top of the second inning.  Marlee Tevis started things off by reaching on a UWP error, advancing to second on Olivia Russell's sacrifice bunt.  An Erica Knollman single up the middle pushed Tevis across home plate for the first run of the game.  Rachel Fox followed up with a single of her own that advanced Knollman to second.  Megan Bretz's grounder to short gave the Rangers another out, but advanced the runners for the Knights.  Next up, Melissa Hammer singled to left field, scoring Fox and Knollman.  In Foster fashion, the senior pitcher stepped to the plate and smacked a homer to left field on the first pitch to put Bellarmine up 5-0.

The Knights recorded another run in the top of the sixth with Bretz getting hit by a pitch and making it home off a single from Hammer and two fielder's choice plays.

Wisconsin-Parkside was only able to connect for four hits, while Foster struck out 10 batters.  Foster led the Knights going 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs and a run of her own.  Hammer went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Game 2 BU 5, UWP 0 (HTM BOX SCORE)

The second game was at a stalemate until the top of the sixth.  Lead off batter, Hammer, drew a walk and Foster's double sent her home for the first run of the game.

Similar to game one in the second, Bellarmine poured on the runs in the top of the seventh inning.  Singles from Knollman and Fox and a sacrifice bunt from Bretz put runners on second and third.  Knollman scored on Hammer's single through the right side, while Fox advanced to third.  Hammer stole second and Foster's sacrifice fly drove Fox home to put the Knights up 3-0.  Next at bat, Kelly Ely sent the ball through the left side, which advanced Hammer to third.  A single from Tevis scored Hammer.  Another single, this time from Russell, was all Bellarmine needed to secure the win with a 5-0 lead.

Foster improved to 16-7 on the season with another win in the circle.  Hammer led the Knights going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run of her own.  Russell also went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
