Holder, Gorham connect in overtime for win over Lewis, entrance into record books

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Moments of pure perfection are rare in sports, but the Bellarmine University women's soccer faithful witnessed one such moment Friday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Late in the first overtime, senior midfielder Lauren Holder made a historic assist to senior forward Mary Beth Gorham for a historic goal in a thrilling 2-1 victory for the No. 25 Knights over Lewis in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

With the helper, Holder became the program's all-time leader in assists with 17. Gorham, meanwhile, is now the Knights' career leader in goals with 40.

"It's very fitting for MB and Lo to get those records together on a game-winner," Bellarmine Coach Chris Tinius said. "Congrats to them on their fantastic achievements.

"Give the kids credit for gutting out another result. We found a way when we had to."

The last time Bellarmine (5-1-1, 3-1-1 GLVC) was at Frazier Stadium the Knights captured a 2-1 overtime victory over Missouri-St. Louis after Gorham spotted Holder for a game-winner on a corner kick. That started a string that continued Friday against Lewis (4-3-1, 2-2-1) of four consecutive overtimes.

While Bellarmine scored quickly in overtime against UMSL, the Knights struck late in the extra session against Lewis. In the 99th minute, Holder made a textbook lead pass ahead to Gorham, who had raced past the defense and gathered the ball with only the goalie between her and the net. As she has so often in her peerless career, the All-American won that battle and deposited her fourth goal of the season, three of which have been game-winners.

Holder has already piled up five assists this season. It was the ninth time the two-time All-Region midfielder delivered an assist on a Gorham goal in their respective careers together.

Both of Bellarmine's goals were precisely executed. In the 39th minute, senior defender Lexy Hazle sent a deep cross from the left wing to freshman forward Olivia Taylor, who expertly struck a header into the net for a 1-0 lead on her third goal of the season.

"I thought Olivia Taylor changed the game when she came on and scored a good goal on a service from Lexy," Tinius said.

After a slow start to the match, Bellarmine controlled much of the first half in taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, but Lewis was the more assertive team after the break. The Flyers appeared to score on a redirect off a free kick, but they were whistled for offsides. Early in the first half, they had a corner kick carom off the far post.

Finally, though, Lewis broke through when Angela Toritto poked in a goal off a strong throw-in from Kianna Clark, tying it at 1-1 in the 69th minute. Bellarmine would later have another scare when a Flyers shot ricocheted off the crossbar.

But Bellarmine also had several missed chances as reflected in a 17-7 advantage on shots, including 7-2 on frame.

"After the first 10 minutes or so, our physical effort on a very hot day was good," Tinius said. "I thought once again we did some big-picture things very well, but we continue to make some really suspect decisions at key moments. Obviously, I need to find some new ways to teach those things so the players feel more comfortable in those moments."

Along with Taylor, Tinius praised Kira Steinke, saying the freshman "helped change the game with her effort in the second half and overtime."

"When people did simple things well consistently, they were rewarded and so was our team," Tinius added. "We're still trying to find that from 11 people at the same time. Until we get it sorted, we will continue to shuffle people until we find combinations that work on a given day. That said, 3-1-1 in this league is a good place to be."

Bellarmine hosts Wisconsin-Parkside at noon (ET) Sunday.
