LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University lacrosse team suffered an 18-7 loss to Mount St. Mary's on Saturday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Tucker Ciessau and
Jack Perkins scored two goals apiece for Bellarmine (1-5) while
Andrew Schoeneck collected three assists against the Mountaineers (1-4).
Brian Wall,
Eric Liddy and
Ian Miller chipped in one goal apiece.
After a 3-3 first quarter, the Knights started the second period with a three-minute non-releasable stick penalty that cost them two goals, swinging the momentum in favor of the Mountaineers. A little over a minute later, Mount St. Mary's scored an uncontested goal to add to the lead.
Bellarmine seemed to stop the bleeding with 4:44 left in the second quarter on a great feed from Schoeneck to Miller only to have the Mountaineers answer at the 3:18 mark. The Knights, who were unable to convert on a 30-second man-up with under a minute left, had a turnover that led to a last-second man-down goal by the Mountaineers, who took an 8-4 halftime lead.
In the second half, Mount St. Mary's continued its fast and efficient play with the first of four goals coming 20 seconds into the third period. It was a long fourth quarter for the Knights, who were unable to get going, even after a great clear by Evan Kalish led to a Perkins goal with 13:45 left in the fourth.
Chris DiPretoro scored four goals for Mount St. Mary's. Four other Mountaineers had two apiece.
Bellarmine opens Southern Conference play with a noon (ET) contest next Saturday at Furman.
